It was a wild ride. It began in the dark with, “a great shriek of wind.” Then came the shaking. The house shook so hard Dorothy lost her footing. She suddenly found her bottom firmly planted on the floor. The only choice she had left was to “enjoy” the ride.

She didn’t choose this ride. It chose her, carrying her, Toto and her house in the exact center of the cyclone, to a place she’d never heard of before.

Yes, I’ve been reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz! It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a children’s story so thoroughly. Perhaps it’s because this year has been a doozy for me – the ride of my life.

And  I KNOW I’m not the only one who’s been on the ride of their life this year. So I want to share the little lovely tidbit of wisdom I’ve learned from Dorothy.

Here’s what you do when you’re in the eye of the storm.

Stay Seated

Did you get thrown to the floor and land hard on your butt? Good! Stay there. When you’re in the eye of the storm, the air around you is still. When Dorothy stayed in her seated position, she rode quite easily.

Ignore the Howling Wind

The howling and screeches of the storm are on the outside. Take your eyes and ears away from the howling, and realize that for the very present moment, you’re inside and okay.

Get Curious and Enjoy the Ride

A cyclone carried away Dorothy, Toto and their house. It was against her will, and out of her control. In the beginning of this ride Dorothy imagined terrible things in her near future. But after a while, when she realized nothing terrible was happening yet, she remained sitting, quite still on the floor, waiting to see what would happen!

When You’re Tired, Take a Nap

After a while of more nothing-terrible happening, she realized she was sleepy. So she got up off the floor, scooped up Toto and took a nap on the bed. It just seemed the right thing to do.

And luckily for both Dorothy and Toto, it was perfect timing. While they rested the house landed. The bed’s soft mattress gave them cushion for a hard landing, and the landing freed the Munchkins from slavery! Do you know why? Because Dorothy’s house landed hard on their slave master – the wicked witch!

Isn’t it rather spectacular that Dorothy’s wild ride, completely out of her control, ended up freeing a whole bunch of Munchkins? Her storm became an entire community’s redemption.

And just think. That was only the beginning of her story.
